Chapter Fourteen
Jennifer walked over and looked down at the pen. âHow did you do that?â
Ryuu bowed. âYou display incredible skill.â I thought he was laying it on a little thick, but maybe he was familiar with cats.
Fidget licked a front paw, a gesture Iâd come to know as his way to appear uninterested when he actually was. Once he had everyone's full attention, he put his paw down.
âI can teach you. For her sake.â He flicked his tail and peered over at Carme, now asleep on our jacket pile. He stretched his front legs, stuck his butt in the air and then sat again. âIf I must.â
âI think our army just found a general,â I said. The others smiled. Fidget regarded me with disdain but didnât protest, so I took it as a good sign. âThat covers moving objects. What about affecting living people?â I asked.
Ryuu gave a smile, floated over to me and flicked me on the arm with his finger. I barely felt it, but I gave him a thumbs up. âGreat job. Thatâs going to be useful.â Or at least, it could be if we could figure out how to make it stronger than a bug landing on me.
âAnyone else?â
It was Robynâs turn to smile. She signed up at Mark, who grinned down at her. He came over to me, respectfully, not too fast, and put his hands under my arms. A second later, my feet were off the ground and our eyes were level. He put me back down and Robyn glowed a little brighter.
âPretty impressive, right?â She gave him a punch through the arm as he went to stand next to her again. He looked extremely pleased.
âThatâs amazing,â I said. âYou didnât mention it when I asked about moving objects.â
She shrugged. âWell, he canât do that, only ghosts and people. Plus, I wanted the dramatic demo.â
âItâs definitely going to be useful.â If he could pick up a vampire, we were getting somewhere.
Ryuu's shoulders sagged, but Jennifer pointed at Mark. âMaybe he can teach us how he does it.â Ryuuâs face brightened and he gave Mark a deep bow.
I held up a finger for their attention. âThis next one might seem simple, but it could lead to something. Can any of you control light?â
Jennifer stepped up this time. She put her hands out like she held a small ball and rotated them, slowly back and forth in a round shape. After a few anticipatory moments, light gathered between her hands. Her hands moved faster and the light grew brighter and bigger.
Ryuu moved closer to examine the ball of light as Robyn gave her two thumbs up.
âWatch this,â Jennifer said. She pulled her hands back a bit, then in a quick arm thrust, threw the light. It hit the wall, spread out and then faded away.
âCan you teach us?â Robyn asked.
Jennifer crossed her arms across her chest, then gave a sly grin. âSure. If you teach me sign language so I can talk to your large friend, there.
